Education

Cedarville University, BA in Spanish, BA in Music, 2010. I studied abroad in Seville, Spain for one semester while in undergrad, and also was an officer in our Spanish club. Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Centro de Enseñanza para Extranjeros; Examen de la Posesión de la Lengua Española (EPLE), nivel A. This exam, administered by the largest university in Mexico, measures the fluency level of non-native Spanish speakers. Level A is the highest level that can be attained, indicating that those who obtain it can, "understand and interpret all types of aural and written texts in both professional and academic spheres. They have the capacity to capture sociolinguistic and cultural references, and all types of shades and subtleties. They have the ability to converse with great fluency in both formal and informal situations." (Translated from the description of level A speakers.) Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary, M.T.S. in Biblical Counseling, 2015. I returned from Mexico to study my Master's degree in Biblical counseling and found the coursework to be very challenging and helpful. In addition to the ways that this has benefitted my in counseling, I see how my one-on-one counseling sessions have also shaped me into a better one-on-one Spanish coach!

Experience

I have been a student all of my life, in both formal and informal contexts. Although I had already been studying Spanish for about 10 years at the time, my Spanish level improved immensely during the two years that I lived in Mexico City. Through my experiences of various educational methods, I have acquired a deep love of learning, as well as an understanding of the challenges that it presents. Since my return to the States, I have been offering Spanish coaching, and I really appreciate the unique approach that it offers. I do not merely teach all of my students by rote memorization, but rather seek to understand where they are coming from -- what their needs, goals, and vision are -- and then I tailor my help to fit their needs. That being said, whether you are simply seeking to fulfill a general education requirement, or are deeply passionate about learning Spanish, I will be happy to help you attain your goals! I also enjoy communication and am happy to help with writing coaching/editing, as well as support for public speaking.

Hobbies

In addition to Spanish, I greatly enjoy learning other new languages, and have studied some French, Portuguese, Classical Hebrew, and Koine Greek. Not surprisingly, I take great delight in anything that has to do with words or communication: reading, conversing with friends, singing, and acting. When not geeking out over languages, I like to spend time playing the piano, dabbling around on my guitar, and playing ultimate Frisbee and soccer. My faith is at the center of my life, and I am actively involved in ministry in my home church. I also enjoy being able to use my degree and counsel others through difficult situations. I hope to pursue long-term missions work in Mexico City in the future.
